A Quebec Grade 6 student wins the grand prize in the national writing contest

A Côte Saint-Luc student wins a $30,000 grant for Habitat for Humanity Quebec

Today, Habitat for Humanity Canada announced the winners of the Meaning of Home national writing contest. Léah C. (Côte Saint-Luc) wins the Grade 6 grand prize for her essay “What My Home Means to Me.” Her grant will go to Habitat for Humanity Quebec.

Since 2007, the Meaning of Home contest has invited students in Grades 4, 5 and 6 to share what home means to them. This year, three grand prize winners and nine finalists joined more than 12,000 students across Canada in raising $302,000 for Habitat for Humanity organizations across the country.

The three grand prize winners each earned a $30,000 grant for their local Habitat for Humanity organization. The finalists each earned a $10,000 grant for their local organization. Congratulations to all the winners, and to everyone who entered and earned a $10 donation for their local Habitat for Humanity organization through their submission.

“Safety, a place of love, somewhere to grow, play, learn and make memories: these are the things children tell us matter most when we ask what home means to them,” said Julia Deans, President and CEO of Habitat for Humanity Canada.

“Housing is the foundation for all of these things, and we continue to build and advocate for families so that more of them can benefit from affordable homeownership.”

“Since the Meaning of Home contest was launched in 2007, more than 100,000 students have shared what home means to them. With the support of Sagen as founding sponsor, these students have raised $2.3 million to help more families in need of housing build stronger lives through housing,” said Stuart Levings, President and CEO of Sagen.

The Meaning of Home contest would not be possible without the generous support of founding sponsor Sagen™ and prize sponsors Urban Systems Foundation, Face to Face Games and Home Trust.
