PlanIt and Habitat for Humanity Quebec partner on a housing repair pilot project in Kahnawà:ke
Kahnawà:ke Mohawk Territory, Ohiarihkó:wa/July 22, 2025 - PlanIt Consulting & Communications, in collaboration with Habitat for Humanity Quebec (HHQ), is proud to announce the launch of a pilot housing renovation project with a small-scale funding program, aimed at meeting the minor repair needs of vulnerable residents of Kahnawà:ke. The project will begin in September 2025.
The pilot project is made possible by a generous $45,000 contribution from Rio Tinto. The Mohawk Council of Kahnawà:ke’s housing unit will also act as a supporting partner, recognizing the importance of coordinating efforts to address housing needs within the community.
The initiative plans to complete three to five renovation projects, depending on the scope and complexity of each case. The work will be carried out by skilled professionals from the community and beyond, supported by volunteer labour and donated materials. Another goal of the project is to create hands-on learning opportunities by involving local schools and trades programs, helping young people develop skills and engage with their community.
"In addition to helping vulnerable members of the community, this initiative aims to build lasting connections among many community stakeholders in Kahnawà:ke and beyond," said Sophie Dalbec, Executive Director of Habitat for Humanity Quebec. "With this pilot project, a modest start given our resources in 2025, we hope to lay a solid foundation for sustained growth."
"One of PlanIt’s most recent projects is Volunteer Kahnawà:ke, an initiative to increase volunteerism in the community. Volunteers can get involved and support this effort in many ways, whether by painting, landscaping, organizing supplies or simply lending a hand. We’re thrilled to take part in this initiative," said Reaghan Tarbell, Volunteer Kahnawà:ke Coordinator.
