Deloitte study reveals Habitat for Humanity's transformative impact

$311 Million in Economic Impact and Transformed Lives

A study conducted by Deloitte confirms the major impact of Habitat for Humanity's affordable homeownership program on Canadian families and the country's economy.

The study "Building Homes, Communities and Hope: A Social and Economic Impact Study of Habitat for Humanity's Affordable Homeownership Program," published in March 2025, demonstrates that the program generated a total economic footprint of $311 million
between 2019 and 2023, while profoundly transforming the lives of thousands of families across Canada.

Impressive Results for Families

The study, based on a survey of over 600 Habitat families (representing 23% of families served), reveals significant changes in all aspects of their lives:

  • 86% report an improvement in their health
  • 70% say they are happier since moving in
  • 65% have noticed an increase in their children's self-confidence and mention a positive impact on their academic success
  • 58% report that their financial situation has significantly improved
  • 22% of children from families served pursue post-secondary education

An Engine for Economic Prosperity

The study reveals that the annual income of families served has increased by an average of $7,525 since moving in, a growth rate three times higher than that of comparable renters. This increase represents $65 million more in earned income between 2006 and 2023.
The program is expected to increase Canada's GDP by $35.7 million annually. Homeowners' contribution to GDP is on average 28% higher than if these individuals had remained renters.

Lasting Benefits for Society

Between 2019 and 2023, Habitat's construction activities generated:

  • $241 million in economic benefits through the construction and supply chain
  • $70 million in additional benefits through jobs and additional wages
  • Nearly $40 million in tax revenue over a five-year period

The study concludes that the effects of Habitat's affordable homeownership program are broad, deep, and lasting, offering an effective response to Canada's housing and productivity crises.
