Kahnawà:ke Home Repairs Program

An innovative partnership for renovations that transform lives

We are proud to partner with PlanIt Consulting & Communications and the Mohawk Council of Kahnawà:ke to launch our first home renovation pilot project. This initiative marks an important milestone in our commitment to addressing the diverse needs of Quebec communities.

Together, we are creating more than decent housing. We are building bridges between communities.

A project that makes a difference

This pilot project aims to address the minor renovation needs of vulnerable Kahnawà:ke residents. The initiative plans to complete three to five renovation projects, depending on the scope and complexity of each case. Work will begin in September 2025.

Thanks to a generous $45,000 contribution from Rio Tinto, we can bring this vision of a respectful and effective partnership to life. The Mohawk Council of Kahnawà:ke's housing unit also serves as a supporting partner, recognizing the importance of coordinating efforts to address housing needs within the community.

A collaborative approach

This pilot project represents much more than renovations. It embodies our people-centered and collective approach: we work with communities, not just for them. The work will be carried out by skilled professionals from within and outside the community, supported by volunteer labour and material donations.

Another important project goal is to create experiential learning opportunities by involving local schools and trades programs, fostering skills development and youth community engagement. This approach creates lasting connections among various community stakeholders in Kahnawà:ke and beyond.

The impact we create together

"This initiative, in addition to helping vulnerable community members, aims to create lasting connections among various community stakeholders in Kahnawà:ke and beyond. Through this pilot project—a modest start given our resources in 2025—we hope to lay a solid foundation for sustained growth."

— Sophie Dalbec, Executive Director of Habitat for Humanity Quebec

Every renovation transforms a life. Every family living in safer housing can focus on what truly matters: building their future. This project also allows us to demonstrate that a respectful partnership model with First Nations communities can create lasting and meaningful results.

How you can help

One of PlanIt's most recent projects is Volunteer Kahnawà:ke, an initiative aimed at increasing volunteerism in the community. As Reaghan Tarbell, Volunteer Kahnawà:ke Coordinator, explains: "Volunteers can get involved and support this effort in many ways, whether by painting, landscaping, organizing materials, or simply lending a hand."
If you would like to contribute to this project through a donation of materials or labour, please contact us.
